if so, in Mint uninstall grub-efi-amd64 shutdown, check that refind allows you to correctly boot both to macOS and Mint after you have installed Mint and booted to it, install refind (simply from the software manager) Device for bootloader installation: select the EFI partition, a small (100-500MB usually) partition in FAT32 format, typically has label EFI. use "something else", assign the ext4 partition to be /. quit gparted, launch the installer, get to the screen with choice between "erase the disk and install Linux Mint" and "something else" In the free space, create an ext4 partition for Mint If you had to have a second partition in step 2, delete it. open gparted, select the internal drive and identify which partition holds macOS (by volume name, size, or looking at how much space is occupied inside). shutdown and reboot to your Linux live USB If Disk Utility has progressed and allows you to do so, then it's best to leave unformatted space for your Linux install Normally the partition holding your system should remain the first one. For instance give a different volume name or a different size. If it's still the case, then make the second partition in APFS and find a way to note which partition holds your system (you dont want to erase that one). Disk Utility could not just leave free unformatted space.
